WA: Hunger strikes losing steam at detention centres
Unrest at immigration detention centres appears to be waning, with more detainees stoppingtheir hunger strikes.
The Immigration Department says Hunger strikes are continuing in just two Western Australiancentres, with the number refusing food dropping from 100 at Curtin yesterday to 70 today, and from 15 to 11 at Port Hedland.
No detainees are on hunger strikes at other immigration facilities.
On Wednesday hundreds of hunger strikers, many with their lips sewn together, abandonedtheir 16-day protest at South Australia's Woomera centre.
A department spokeswoman says Woomera remained calm overnight, although one detaineewas transferred to the centre's medical facilities for treatment unrelated to the hungerstrike.
She says a further two detainees are being treated in Woomera Hospital and one at WhyallaHospital, again for matters unrelated to the protest action.
