Fed: Govt marine debris plan overshadowed by plastic bags
The federal government's bid to protect marine wildlife from plastic waste has beenovershadowed by complaints it's doing little to rid the environment of plastic bags.
Environment Minister DAVID KEMP says Australia's marine wildlife is officially underthreat from ocean debris, with the government beefing up the law to better protect turtles, whales, seabirds and sharks.
A threat abatement team will now be chosen to find ways to save wildlife from the perilsof marine debris.
But the opposition and Australian Greens say the government has again failed to introducea concrete measure to curb plastic bag use.
Labor's environment spokesman KELVIN THOMSON says the marine debris announcement isabout covering up the fact the government can't fight its way out of plastic bag problems.
