Fall brings on a lot of strange urges; we get restless on the windy days or when we see geese arrowing by.

Earthbound, we want to stuff ourselves with apples, breads, soups, pot roasts, cabbage.

Cabbage?

That's right. There's something comforting about this tart, crunchy vegetable, come the cold.

I don't believe I ever cooked cabbage until I was married, but my husband, who variously claims to be of Polish, Russian, German or Latvian descent or all of the above, and who eats cabbage raw like you or I might eat an apple, introduced me to this homely vegetable.
