Fed: Lobby questions whether govt will meet defence promises
A defence lobby group is questioning if the existing government and future governments
will meet future defence commitments which have been made in today's Defence White Paper.
Australian Defence Association executive director MICHAEL O'CONNOR says the amount
expected to be committed in the paper should be enough.
The paper is expected to commit at least $500 million extra to defence next year and
funding increases of around three per cent annually for the rest of the decade.
Mr O'CONNOR's told Channel Nine the real question is whether the current government
and successive governments will meet the commitments, because they haven't done so in
the past.

Vic: Power restrictions to continue in spite of return to work
MELBOURNE, Feb 8 AAP - Power restrictions will continue to plague Victoria today even
though striking workers have returned to the job at the troubled Yallourn power plant.
Premier Steve Bracks said power restrictions would remain in place until at least tomorrow
because it would take between three and five days for the Yallourn Energy plant to return
to full generating capacity.
Yallourn generates a fifth of all Victoria's electricity needs.
The power workers returned to the job last night after Mr Bracks ordered Yallourn …

Vic: Anti nuclear group protests at the wrong place
MELBOURNE, Dec 6 AAP - Melbourne's Uranium Information Centre (UIC) today said it "welcomed
a small but misguided protest" outside its offices against a proposal to establish a high-level
nuclear waste dump in the Australian outback.
The small group of protesters from the Friends of the Earth environment group marked
the first anniversary of the leaking of a promotional video outlining the planned dump
by Pangea Resources.
The video, intended as part of an advertising campaign to win over Australians to the
idea of a nuclear waste dump in outback Australia, was leaked to Friends of the Earth
in London a year ago.
But UIC general manager Ian Hore-Lacy today said the protesters "had come to the wrong
place" to voice their disapproval of the Pangea proposal.
"However, there is a benefit for us because the protesters' objective is to generate
publicity, and this provides us with the perfect opportunity to increase the UIC's public
profile and remind people of our role in providing information on nuclear issues," he
said.
Mr Hore-Lacy said the UIC was not a lobbyist on nuclear and uranium issues, merely
an information provider on a range of matters, including the Pangea proposal.
"The more people know about us, the more they will contact us for information," he said.
"The protest may attract some attention and contribute to replacing prejudice with
information on such issues."
He did confirm Pangea was a participating member of the UIC, as were about eight other
companies undertaking uranium exploration or feasibility studies in Australia.
Protest spokesman Mr Daniel Voronoff said despite widespread outrage at the plan, Pangea
was pressing ahead with a long-term campaign to see the project go ahead.
He said it was vital the Federal Government took immediate legislative action to ban
the importing of nuclear waste.
The protesters had planned to use a mock nuclear transport truck in the protest, but
police ruled it would be too disruptive to traffic.

WA:Barnett unfazed by Woodside Browse delay
PERTH, Dec 19 AAP - West Australian Premier Colin Barnett says Woodside Petroleum's
move to delay an investment decision on its Kimberley gas hub is not a significant setback
for the $30 billion-plus project.
Woodside said on Monday it wants a final investment decision that is due by mid-2012
extended into the first half of 2013.
Mr Barnett, a strong backer of the proposed gas hub at James Price Point, told reporters
that at the end of the day it was a private sector project and it was Woodside and its
joint venture partners who would have to decide whether to go ahead.
"The fact that a final investment decision is probably delayed by about a year I don't
regard as particularly serious or a significant setback," he told reporters in Perth on
Monday.
Mr Barnett said the Woodside decision was not related to a recent court ruling that
found the WA government had incorrectly applied to compulsorily acquire the James Price
Point site, nor to protests against the gas hub.
"This is simply (a case of) how do you collectively fund a $30 billion to $40 billion
project in a remote location on an entirely greenfields site?" he said.
Mr Barnett said there may be some reorganisation within the joint venture and issues
about bringing the cost of the project down.
He noted there had been years of delays in decisions to proceed with projects on the
Northwest Shelf off Western Australia.
